A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast took place as police and firefighters approached the residence close to the city of Verona to enforce an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

All three victims who died served in the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the explosion was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the location revealed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the residence was under an eviction order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to engage the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe a family member caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the explosion had occurred on a level above the access point and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he said officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to Italian media, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
